Before we began producing our music video, as a group, we did a lot of research into other music videos of the same genre (RnB). This enabled us to see what the typical conventions are for this genre's music videos. Therefore we could use them in our music video which will help out target audience to more easily recognise our product for what it is. Or to even challenge the typical conventions to portray a message.

MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS

A lot of major decisions were made from surveying our target audience of young females aged 16-20, so we could take into consideration what would appeal to them. Through this we found out that they like to see some of the typical conventions of an RnB challenged as they found them quite demeaning e.g women wearing promiscuous outfits. Voyerisum is present through a lot Music videos. Especially in RnB where women are often showed to be wearing very little clothing, high heels and lots of make up.Ultimately adhere to Laura mulvey theory of the mala gaze since women are presented as an object of male desire. Therefore we wanted our artist wear what a typical teenager would wear (jeans and top) so that the audience felt they could relate to her. This was almost likeining to the girl next door stereotype (wholesome and pretty) but we didnt want her to seem too wholesome and maybe innocent so the audience really believed what she was singing, as the lyrics in the song make her seem worldy and experinced.

Our initial idea was to have the whole music video follow a narrative and take place at the house party, something we thought our target audience would find interesting to watch as it is something they may relate to as they are teenagers who are likely to party. However, after research and watching other music videos that fall under the same genre of RnB, we found that they often include multiple scenes and multiple locations. Therefore we had decided to include flashbacks of past relationships like in Beyoncé ' Best thing I never had ' video as this will give a back story to the audience so they could get a deeper understanding of the storyline. In addition to this, we felt that following just a narrotive was quiet flat and the audience may be bored and lose interest. Therefore, after looking at various music videos a main convention was performance. So additionally we decided to include choreographed dance scenes and lip sync, heavily influenced by Tinashe " 2 on" and Kehlani " The way" we used a similar dance routine in our own production because the promiscuity increased the meaning behind the relationships story line. We filmed the dance scenes but during this we recognised it was very difficult for our artist to be able to lip sync and dance at the same time whilst making sure it was on beat. Later on we filmes seperate lip sync scenes which we added in between the narrative

During my research i discovered that the close up and mid shot were used to create the artist at the main focus Close ups was used mainly during lip syncing. I believe that this is an extremely important technique beacuse it accentuates the meaning behind the lyrics. This is because the artist exaggerates their facial expressions and it is in a close up shot so the audience are forced to see this. The audience will then decode the message portrayed in the lyrics and esseintially relate to the artist.

In this particular close up she is shown to be looking away from the camera, the audience may see her as being scared, insecure or vunerable as she doesnt confidently look directly into the camera

DIGIPAK ANALYSIS

Our digipak clearly conforms to some of conventions of digipaks as before hand I had looked at some existing ones for the conventions that are included in digipaks, for example, the main image, band name, track lists.

The conventions we included were:

  • The Front Panel - Main image, usually of the artist/band or something that symbolic of them. Name of artist and album in big font, to catch audiences' attention.

  • Back Panel - Usually has track list, and printed on in contrasting colours so the audience is able to read it.

  • Colour Scheme - Usually reflects the mood of album or the genre of the tracks/songs on the disc

REAL DIGIPAK WE LOOKED AT

We were influenced by the simplicity of Nicole Scherzingers digipak as well as the photographs of the artist being the main focus so we also included this in our digipak. also we took great inspiration of the poses of looking down to the floor as you can see we tried to emulate them in our digipak too. The digipak for the album killer love has grey and neutral tones which make is quite soft and pretty but for our own digipak we knew that we wanted something harsher and more gritty so we stuck to a black and white colour scheme

MAGAZINE ADVERT ANALYSIS

My magazine advert utilses all of the main conventions of real media texts and not particularly challenged them. Below are some of the real magazine adverts we looked at to become familiar with the conventions

We have clearly stuck to conventions of real media texts as you can see that our magazine advert includes all the typical conventions such as the artists name, album title, reviews, picture of digipak and release date. Similarily to the magazine adverts we looked out we followed a structure of having the artists name big and bold and underneath this is the album title. However we developed it by adding a QR code, very few adverts have these but thought this would be suitable for our target audience, as young poeple are very tech savy and use smart phones. Therefore this QR code could be linked to an app on your phone. In addition we also added reviews and ratings to the magazine advert, this is more common of digipaks that magazine advert but we felt  as a new artist and being a debut album this would be very benefical as it is likely to reassure the target audience that it is an album worth purchasing as popular, establish brands say good things about the album
