Question 4: How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Media technologies played an important role in the making of my music video along with the ancillary texts.
The Internet was an essential platform for my research and planning stages. Due to my limited knowledge in the creation of these types of media texts, I was able to research existing products and conventions used, and as a result this made me far more confident in creating an effective music video. Digital platforms such as YouTube and Google also enabled me to find the song 'Stranger' which was the key creative element in my advanced portfolio. I was also able to use the internet for research into possible meanings behind the lyrics, such as retorical questions , which are used throughout the song, because the artist knows the answer to the questions used in the song’s lyrics.
During the post-production stages, I chose to use the editing software, iMovie. Despite this being considered to be far more basic, as a result I found it to be less time consuming in comparison to Final Cut Pro, therefore making it more convenient. I also felt as though the benefits that came with iMovie outweighed those drawbacks of Final Cut Pro as one of the key elements of my music video was to do with fluidity, and which is therefore why the speed adjustments played such an important role. From my preliminary task at AS I learnt that Final Cut Pro’s slow motion was limited to 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%, which would have, therefore have made the editing proces lot harder Furthermore because my locations were a mixture of indoors and outdoors, I relied completely on natural lighting and flashights when fliming inside.
As for my ancillary texts, I used PicMonkey in order to manipulate the images through cropping them and adding layers of text, this made any text placed on top more legible. I stand out even more, I added a drop shadow on the text, which will therefore create an effective mode of address.
Throughout my media product, I had to track the different stages that I had gone through in order to show my progression. I had to make a website rather than a blog at A2, and I decided to use Wix. In comparison to Tumblr, Wix was far more complex as the layout had to be altered individually, which also caused it to be a lot more time consuming. Despite this, although it was more difficult, I believe I was a lot more passive in terms of the thinking whilst using Tumblr whereas with Wix at A2 I was more active, and made conscious decisions about where to place buttons for example, to make it as user friendly as possible.
