Music Video Theorist

EXPLORE THE UNKNOWN

Theory

Tim O’Sullivan – all media texts have tell us some kind of story

Through careful mediation

  • Media texts offer a way of telling stories about ourselves

  • Not usually our own personal stories, but the story of us a culture or set of cultures ideologies

  • O’Sullivan – for the structure to work there has to be an establishment of plot or theme

AN ELEMNT OF MY MUSIC VIDEO

3- 5 ABOUT YOUR STORY (TASK)

  • A Story about a girl overcoming heat break and coming to terms with this familiar pain which triggers memories of her past

Pam Cook (1995) – a Hollywood narrative structure should have:

Cause and effect – ‘linearity of cause and effect within an overall trajectory of enigma resolution’

  • High degree of narrative closure

  • A fictional world that contains verisimilitude especially  governed by spatial and temporal coherence

Stage 1 – everything is stable, normal, calm

Stage 2 – stability is disrupted by some mind of force creates a state of disequilibrium

Stage 3 – recognition of disruption

Stage 4 – action directed against the disruption

Stage 5 - restoration of a new state of equilibrium

How we incorporate this theory in our video

  • Stage 1 – Being by Leiyla (the artist ) walking in to the party with her friend oblivious to her surroundings

  • Stage 2 – she then sees a familiar face her ex-lover who she sees with other girls, this evokes past emotions to erupt

  • Stage 3 – he talks to her creating memories to flood back

  • Stage 4 – she rejects him because she realises that she has moved on and left the past in the past

  • Stage 5 – she parties and enjoys herself

Claude Levi

– all stories operated to certain clear binary opposites e.g good vs evil, black vs white,

Protagonist – main character leiyla

Antagonist – the ex-lover
